Line recommendations
Below grain weight and head length guidelines for water-anchored spey style roll casting based on our product testing. Line preference is personal to your casting style and end use, be prepared to experiment.
We preferred: A short (14’-18’) head skagit 250-300 grains with a 5-8’ polyleader. Full grain window 275-350gn head plus tip up to about 25’ combined.
For Scandi applications try a single handed or compact head light spey style line of a similar or slightly lighter grain rating and a total head length including tip of 25-30' (if the line design requires one, a SH line may not).
Overhead single-handed casting: This is the same blank we sell as the TIM 10667. Not only a cracking light spey rod, it also performs very well standard overhead casting as a medium-fast action boat/loch style fly rod (AFFTA #6-7 line, 160-200gn).
For rod testing we used flat mono shooting line and a poly tip or poly leader of 5-8’. If using a poly tip (with a PVC loop both ends) finish off with a short (4-7’) tapered nylon leader for best fly turnover. With a poly leader (PVC loop one end, nylon line the other) simply add an optional tippet ring and a few feet of your final tippet.
